1:1 Somatic Experiencing & Trauma Resolution

Restore your relationship to your body. Resolve traumatic cycles and free-up more energy for life in the present moment. Repair past relational wounds to bring more love into your current connections.

Soma: “the living organism in its wholeness.

Somatics is the practice of working with the Soma, not the brain and body as separate parts coming together, but the connected and integrated self that you've always been.

In Somatic Experiencing we create space to experience the soma; to encounter ourselves, in our wholeness, in our aliveness, as we are, not as we could, would or should be.

We work with the whole and the relationship between the parts that make it up, restoring coherence through connection.

In this work we are tending to your most foundational relationship: your relationship to yourself and your body, the root from which all of your relationships flow. We do this by restoring the innate connection between your body and your mind. By interrupting the habitual leap from body sensations to cerebral processing, we redirect established neural pathways and create new channels of connection and growth. Over time, this transforms not only how we experience the terrain of our bodies but the entire landscape of our lives.

“Anyone, no matter their history, can begin to hear wholeness beckoning, whether in a shout or a whisper, and resolve to move in its direction. With the heart as a guide and the mind as a willing and curious partner, we follow whatever path most resonates with that call.”

— Gabor Maté, The Myth of Normal

✹ Foundational Elements

Safety is not where we stay, but it’s where we begin.

When we know we have safety to return to, we can go anywhere, explore any edge, feel any feeling, touch any tender place. Safety can be a place or a person, but ultimately safety comes from your own center, your relationship to yourself, a place you can always return to. Through this work, you can become the "safe-other" that your nervous system needs to know it's okay, without anything needing to change. This is crucial to understand: safety is not control. Safety is a feeling, a felt-sense; the embodied knowing that you can be with what is.

Our role is to create the conditions in which the wisdom of the body can do what it naturally does.

We follow the wisdom of the body, which is always doing its best to move toward balance, wholeness, healing, and safety. There is a natural rhythm to this process:expansion and contraction, which creates movement over time. It is elemental; fire needs enough air but also enough containment in order to thrive. A river needs enough flow to stay clear but the banks keep it from dissipating and dissolving. We are supporting the Soma, the organism in its wholeness and intelligence, to complete its responses.

Transformation is an inside-out process. It implies that we already have what we need and desire within us.

It’s not outside of us, waiting to be acquired or achieved. Change is constant regardless; fixedness is an illusion. We can guide the direction of change. Embodied transformation goes deeper than working just on the level of beliefs, thoughts, and the mind, because it works with the ground from which our beliefs, thoughts, and stories sprout: the body. When we work somatically, our bodies become fertile ground for the organic process of becoming who we really are underneath the conditioning, posturing, and chronic stress.

All relationships are built on trust, your relationship to your body is no different.

It is only in the absence of trust that relationships built on control can arise. Control is based on fear; trust is based on love: love for self, love for other, love for life. The essence of trust is palpable in the air when it is present. Think about someone you trust, what happens in your body, your mind? What becomes possible when trust is present? Over time, through the process of cultivating safety, creating space for what organically wants to unfold, and witnessing embodied transformation, trust builds in our relationship with ourselves, with our bodies. Trust becomes an anchor, a compass, the ground from which we can navigate our lives.

✹ Layers of this work.

  • so·mat·ic (a) : of, relating to, or affecting the body

ex·pe·ri·ence (n) direct observation of or participation in events as a basis of knowledge

Somatic Experiencing™ is a trauma resolution and stress reduction modality created by Peter Levine, informed by his simple and profound observation that wild animals regularly face life-threatening situations but don't develop PTSD or chronic trauma symptoms the way humans do. They complete their stress responses through shaking/discharge and return to baseline. Somatic Experiencing™ theorizes that trauma and traumatic chronic stress are incomplete survival responses—moments where we couldn't complete instinctual fight/flee responses. These unfinished responses remain recorded in the implicit memory of the nervous system, creating patterns of incoherence and disconnection. In Somatic Experiencing™️ we create the conditions and resources necessary to work with the body's innate capacity to complete those survival responses, freeing up bound survival energy. • Trauma can be understood as any moment that overwhelmed our ability to respond. When we couldn't fight, flee, or find safety, that unresolved energy gets stored in the body. This is why working with the body is so fundamental to trauma resolution; trauma is a physiological response to overwhelming survival stress, whether from a single big event or many small events linked together over time. Trauma and chronic stress can make it feel like we can't safely be in our bodies. This disconnection perpetuates our feeling of being in danger, because it severs us from our instincts, true feelings, and desires. When we restore our sense of being able to be safely in our bodies, we restore the natural flow of life force through our whole system. Trauma resolution is as much about trauma as it is about restoring what trauma takes from us—safety, choice, aliveness, connection, play, creativity, pleasure, joy, complexity and nuance. It is a restoration of your wholeness through which you can shape and experience your life.

  • Somatic Experiencing™ supports us not only in resolving and repairing past traumas and ongoing chronic stress but is equally as powerful for exploring our growth edges, deepening creativity, and expanding capacity for aliveness. We need to grow our capacity to not only hold space for the challenging feelings in our lives, we also need to grow capacity to receive the goodness of our lives, embody the power of our desires and longings and feel fully the aliveness that comes with being truly present in our lives. Like the gardener who knows to tend the soil, sunlight, and water when the rose doesn't blossom, Somatic Experiencing™ helps us create the conditions for our own natural unfolding.

  • Somatic Womb Work is a modality being developed by Dr. Jeevan Singh, Kris González DAcCHM, and myself over at Womb School. Somatic Womb Work supports you in cultivating greater womb and pelvic bowl embodiment. It guides us to the womb space as a place of reclaimed safety, as the seat of our pleasure, creativity and vitality, where deep healing becomes possible. We do this through gently and respectfully reestablishing your innate relationship to your womb and pelvic bowl, at a pace and rhythm that meets you where you are. This work is available to anyone, regardless of whether you have a physical womb.

  • Birth is an all-encompassing initiation into the lifelong path of parenthood. There is a you before giving birth and a you after giving birth. Birth fundamentally reorganizes you, and often this can be incredibly overwhelming, especially in a culture that lacks rituals to honor this rewiring and structures that support parents in integrating their newfound role and responsibility. When the experience overwhelms our capacity to integrate it, birth can leave unresolved imprints in the body, much like trauma does. Somatic Birth Story Integration lets you reweave these overwhelming moments into touchstones of resilience and points of power, through slowing things down and making space for your natural instincts and impulses to emerge.
